These are not particularly exciting drawings, but I wanted to practice mixing skin tones with my travel watercolour palette. One thing that I noticed was that my brush is very powerful at soaking up water/pigment, while the metal palette is super hydrophobic. What this means for me is that it makes it very hard to do light washes because any/all colour pigment/water gets sucked up from the palette, into my brush. Anything liquid on the palette just globs into droplets because of surface tension. I might have to use a plastic palette to mix skin tone in the future, or pour water directly into the metal palette.

It's Austin and Jake again, this time in logger sports uniform in the locker room. This picture would make more sense after you read Motivation, Concentration oneshot comic. The theme was more or less, "passing the baton" to the next generation.

Materials

  • Col-erase 20066 scarlet red
  • Canson XL mixed media paper (7"x 10")
  • Various from Pentel watercolour and SHINHAN SWC Premium Professional Artist Grade

Insider details

  • I find ballcap bills to be extremely hard to draw, so I took photo reference of myself for these paintings
  • The captain hat's mascot is a reindeer, inspired by a reindeer plush I got from Tokyu Hands in Tokyo ~2012.
  • Their sense of organization is different
  • Jake is overall not really into wearing hats, but will wear it for tradition's sake, during public competition only (it gives him hat hair)

The skintone here is a mix of red and ochre yellow from the pentel set. I put a bit more brown/blue in Austin's tone, and a bit more red undertone for Jake's.

My scanner freaked out when I scanned the pictures. I was applying pressure on the scan bed to flatten out the ripples. When I didn't apply pressure to the scan bed, it scanned as normal.

More recently I've been drawing character sheets for my own reference. It's nice to be able to look back at something for consistency sake. Just the act of drawing through a character sheet helps me problem solve and go into greater depth/build-up the character to have a bit more substance. Needing to consciously think about the fit and style of clothing, etc. makes me put myself into the characters mindset.

I enjoy making these, but the reality is that a lot of details will not necessarily bubble up to the surface in any story/comic... but it's a nice to have.

Here are some recent ones for Jake, Austin, and Ceilic, all drawn in Fire Alpaca! I like the animals parts the most, as you would expect...

IDK why but I'm always calling Austin Jake, instead of Austin. Maybe there's something very Jake about Austin's look? But conversely, Jake looks nothing like an Austin.

I originally wrote Ceilic's name as "Celic" in this picture, and wondered why it looked strange. I had to reread my own comic to find out the correct spelling. Amazing! I also found these amazing plush bears in armor while looking up scabbard reference to draw Ceilic. WORTH IT!

Guild Wars 2 Path of Fire expansion is coming out later this month. I haven't been playing it much, aside from when new episodes/stories are released. I've really struggled to keep up with all the game updates and am a really BAD player (bad as in, just button mash and don't play with much strategy or thought).

I do however, LOVE playing dressup and makeovers with my characters.

Ceilic

Ceilic was originally from Knight Life and now has a doppelganger in GW2. Pandr and Man started in GW2, but then influenced the creation of characters that now live in the same city as Ceilic.

The universe that these characters live in is a pretty generic "fantasy" world set in the past (e.g., before electricity and machines), and includes a lot of other characters. Some of them will never interact, but I like to think about what they're do if they did. Below are Emanon, Lateroc, and Edon, who are in a more high-fantasy european inspired part of the fantasy world.

And a southeast asia-inspired part as well, which is where the wuxia-influenced characters reside.

Image description Image description

I have two other universes as well; one is a plain modern day world, and the other is the animal/creature world! Though I think that the animal/creatures do mix with the humans in the plain modern day world. More on that, perhaps another time!

I've been doing moderate amounts of brainstorming about these two characters, Jake and Austin, for the past month or so. I'm contemplating during a longer form comic about them.

Paintings below are inspired by the comics found in FujoSports (autumn hiking, younger in age), and then Expired Seafood: Tied Up (winter hiking, older in age).

I did a quick thumbnail for the autumn hiking scene, while the winter one was pretty much a random sketch.

Materials:

  • Col-erase 20066 scarlet red, 20053 Terra Cotta
  • Mitsubishi Fine Prussian Blue (hard 2453)
  • Canson XL mixed media paper (7"x 10")
  • Various from Pentel watercolour and SHINHAN SWC Premium Professional Artist Grade

After sketching I painter-taped both sheets onto the smooth side of a masonite board. The paper I'm using is NOT thick or great for watercolours, but I more or less just consider these to be studies, and I'm not even using high end watercolours either.

My original intent was to re-outline the pictures, but I decided to keep it blobby instead! Final version are below and/or in the gallery~

Whilst sick this weekend, I had some time to finally hunker down and read through what's available of the online webcomic, Novae, an LGBT+ historical romance comic steeped in mystery, necromancy and the wonders of the universe. I had the pleasure of meeting KaiJu at TCAF before. Everytime their work graces my timeline, I just feel a sense of delight because their work is so quietly beautiful, and both meticulous and simple. I honestly wish that I could draw and create stories like them! I can keep wishing...!

To pay tribute to their work, I drew one of the main characters, Sulvain. I really enjoy picking out the nuanced cultural details in the clothing and environment of Novae. Here is my feeble attempt of lifting the webcomic's current colour palette, into a quick illustration.

They also recently launched a Patreon, so if you are a fan of their work and would like to support them, please check it out! They also have a gumroad and some work available through Sparkler Monthly as well!
